How can a player named as one of the top 50 ever collegiate football players of all time, and one of only two cornerbacks on the team have his number retired but on the behalf of another player? San Diego State University Aztecs are planning on doing just that, retiring Willies number in the name of Marshall Faulk. Granted Faulk was a very good player at SDSU and was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the 1994 draft but - his career at SDSU and as a professional has not reached the heights of Mr. Buchanon. Lets look at the facts - Mr. Buchanon graduated from SUDU with his degree in Education and was named as a Distinguished Alumni of the Year by the School of Education. Mr. Faulk has not graduated from SDSU, he left school in his junior year. Mr. Buchanon is an avid supporter of SDSU and I do not mean just the Athletic Dept. but the entire University, on many levels. Mr. Buchanon served as a Board Member of the Aztec Athletic Foundation and is a former President of the organization. Mr. Buchanon was in the Inaugural group on inductees into the SDSU Hall of Fame. Mr. Buchanon was named as one of only two corner backs on the 50 greatest Collegiate Football players of all time Team by the Sporting News. Of course he is the only SDSU player named to the team. Called by former Coach Don Coryell the "best defensive back I ever coached". When he left SDSU he played in the East West Shrine Game and was named MVP, the All American Bowl, the Senior Bowl and the College All Star Game . Professionally, he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers as a 1st round pick and the 7th over-all player in the draft and went on to win NFL "Rookie of the Year" honors. He was the 1st defensive back chosen in that draft. Mr. Buchanon was All-Pro 2 times and played in the NFL for 11 seasons. Get with it SDSU either do a dual retirement or retire the number to the player and person who deserves it Mr.Willie Buchanon. This native son of San Diego deserves better, something like this has to negatively affect recruiting and fund raising. Buchanon was a Junior College All American who chose to stay her in San Diego and play for the Aztecs, he was even born right here in Oceanside. SDSU is always crying about keeping talent here at home, many of those kids who are considering colleges today have parents who remember Willie Buchanon and you can bet they will remember how you treat one of their own. Sincerely, Welcome to Afrogolf.com serving the African American Golfing Community.
