Now Tiger joins this elite group of golfers in the record books.MAUI, Hawaii --In 1999 Woods became the first PGA player since Johnny Miller in 1975 to record eight victories. Tiger joined Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan to record five consecutive Tour victories. Tiger's 40-foot putt puts him into the record books Woods became only the fifth player in PGA Tour history to win five consecutive tournaments, outlasting Ernie Els in a two-hole playoff today to capture the season-opening Mercedes Championships. Two of the sport's elite players staged a day-long duel at the Plantation course at Kapalua, both eagling the par-5 18th hole to force sudden death. Woods and Els returned to No. 18 and birdied to extend the playoff. Els left his birdie attempt just short moments before,Woods rolled in a 40-foot birdie putt to win. "It feels a lot better when you can beat the best players head-up," Woods said. "He's gotten me before, I've gotten him. It's been a nice little tug we've had together. Both times, actually all the times we've played, we pretty much have played some great golf." The $522,000 first prize gave Woods a jump on his single-year earnings record of $6,616,585. This $2.9 million tournament, open only to winners of 1999 events, was the first of two consecutive weekends for the PGA Tour in Hawaii. The Sony Open, the year's first full-field event, will be held in Honolulu. |
