September 2000
Reggie Grant pictured with Lee Elder. The world is a strange and wonderful place. Today I had the opportunity to meet one of my personal idols and heroes, Mr. Lee Elder. I often meet sports personalities and other celebrities but this is a once in a life time meeting. This man opened doors, with his determination, class and character, he is larger than mere sports. This man exemplifies all those African Americans who have sacrificed so that my generation and future generations might have better opportunities to live the dream of Dr. King, to be judged for who we are not for the color of ones skin or ethnic background. Lee Elder is a man who stood for what's right and carried the whole African American community on his shoulders, back in 1979 when he played in the Masters as the 1st African American to do so. I remember seeing Mr. Elder on television congratulating Tiger when he won the event and tears of joy came to my eyes as another milestone was accomplished. We as African American must not forget the triumphs and struggles that our fore fathers have endured. As we enjoy the fruits of their struggles and our labor, but we must remember that the struggle continues and we have people like Mr. Lee Elder to thank for where we are today. Not only was this man a great leader by his example, he is truly a humble and gracious person who truly still is a class act. Thank you Lee Elder for being who you are... A Living Legend.
