When I first started this project people kept asking me if there were black golfers
besides Tiger Woods. Of course there are and have been many great golfers of African
American descendent but it wasn't until resent history that African Americans were allowed
to fully participate. The Charlie Sifford's, "Rags" Rhodes, Madison Gunther's
and Luther Satterwhite's have always been there, the opportunities haven't. The only
publication on the market that addresses issues of importance to African American Golfers
is the 'Minority Golf" magazine out of Colorado, published quarterly. I read lots of
golf publications and all of them had articles and editorials talking about how poor
"Fuzzy" got such a raw deal. Well, as an African American I totally disagreed
with every article, editorial and letter I saw, which defended poor "Fuzzy". So,
I knew that Afrogolf.com was a much needed forum for the African American golf community
as a means to communicate, network and be educated.
As a golf addict it is truly rewarding to be able to be involved in this great sport. It's
amazing how addicting this game is, I began to play about four years ago after I was
bitten by the bug at a NFL celebrity tournament .I had been exposed to golf as a youngster
as my great uncles (the Satterwhite's of Georgia) were avid golfers especially my great
Uncle Luther Satterwhite. But I grew up in Seattle and they were in Atlanta so I never
really started playing. Now I understand their love for the game and I hope I can
contribute to helping more African Americans enjoy the many benefits of golf from exercise
to networking. Over the years, I had been to golf courses a few times, and the driving
range once or twice with friends but, once I had a chance to participate in a full
round I was hooked. I had earned my way through college (Univ. of Oregon) on a
football scholarship and briefly played professionally (NY Jets & Ottawa) so I
considered myself an athlete. But no athletic game has ever been so mentally
challenging as golf, I guess that's one of it's attractions.
We look forward to bringing you golf from an African American perspective and
flavor. We are constantly under construction adding new features and areas, we will
have a encrypted /secure on-line ordering system soon. Please come back often.
Sincerely,
Reginald Grant |
