A Word from the Publisher !

June 1998

I had the unique opportunity to interview Pete Brown the First African American to win a PGA event. What an inspirational person, he is so humble for all that he has accomplished. I would like to thank his wife Margaret for sending me the pictures and providing me insight into Mr. Brown’s journey.

During my business travels in May I visited St. Louis, Missouri and had the opportunity to play with a eighty-one year old African American man. It reminded me one of the true reasons people play golf, to socialize and enjoy other peoples company. I arrived in St Louis early in the morning, rented a car and proceeded to leave the garage. I happened to see four senior African American men taking a break and I stopped to ask them where I could play golf with some blacks. I was in the research mode and wanted to check out a course with an African American past. They directed me to Jefferson Golg Course, which is right in the heart of St Louis in Forest Park.

It was a delight to play with this gentleman who had served in World War II as an African American solider and the picture he painted was so very different from the movies I saw as a child. We discussed how things have changed, how even in 1979 African Americans were regularly turned away from this very course. How so many young people do not appreciate the sacrifices made to give them the opportunities and rights they take for granted. Well I am thankful to god for the opportunities afforded me and I hope that we can learn to appreciate those who have come before us. We here at Afrogolf.com want to share our unique history and culture with the next generation, so we will be having more youth related features like the monthly featured Jr. Golfer. We will also have added several new sponsors who will be proving FREE monthly prizes and give-always.

Well , keep all your drives in the fairway and play around the greens with a soft touch, thanks for all the great letters and email.

Sincerely,

Reginald Grant
