As a part of The PGA Community Relations Program Six Historically Black Colleges in Atlanta receive $50K from PGA and Atlanta Athletic Club!

The PGA of America, in partnership with The Atlanta Athletic Club, announced the original donation during the 2001 PGA Championship. The Atlanta schools receiving the donation are: Clark Atlanta University, The ITC (International Technical Center), Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, Morris Brown College and Spellman College.

The PGA of America and Atlanta Athletic Club of Duluth, Ga., combined for a presentation of a $50,000 check in early December as part of an overall $200,000 donation to six historically black colleges in Atlanta. The funds kick off the fall semester's presentation of GOLF: For Business & Life, a growth of the game initiative that is part of The PGA Community Relations Program. The GOLF: For Business & Life Program now reaches 24 colleges or universities as part of The PGA of America's Growth of Game programs. The Atlanta University Center will administer the donations to the six Atlanta schools.

The GOLF: For Business & Life program began in 1999 as a pilot program at Purdue University, funded by golf course architect Pete Dye and his wife, Alice, a noted amateur golfer and past member of The PGA of America Board of Directors. The program, taught by PGA Professionals, is designed to acquaint students with the opportunities that golf provides as a business tool and as a sport for life.

Since its inception in 1999, the program has involved more than 3,500 men and women college-age students. The PGA of America has distributed $1.74 million to the 24 colleges/universities.

Fourteen schools were recipients of donations on behalf of American participants in the 1999 Ryder Cup Matches. The Nicklaus Equipment Company is the chief donor of golf clubs for the program, in addition to donations from PGA Professionals and students.

The following universities, through the donations of 1999 U.S. Ryder Cup Team members, participate in Golf: For Business & Life: University of Texas-Austin (Captain Ben Crenshaw, Justin Leonard), Georgia Tech (David Duval), University of Arizona (Jim Furyk), University of Minnesota and California Polytechnic State University (Tom Lehman), University of North Carolina (Davis Love III), Texas A&M University (Jeff Maggert), Arizona State University (Phil Mickelson), Long Beach State University (Mark O'Meara), UCLA, UC-Santa Barbara (Steve Pate), Centenary College (Hal Sutton), Southern Methodist University (Payne (Tracey) Stewart) and Stanford University (Tiger Woods).

Additional colleges/universities within the GOLF: For Business & Life program received PGA Growth of the Game grants totaling $140,000. They are: Bergen County Community College in Upper Saddle River, N.J.; Tri-State University in Angola, Ind.; the University of New Hampshire in Lee, N.H.; and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.
