Davis Love III
" It was fun playing in this event with the women, but the pin placements were
very, very difficult."
One year ago, shooting three rounds of
four-under 66 on the grindingly difficult Winged Foot Golf Club's West course, Davis Love
III turned a good PGA Tour career into a great one. Love's five-shot victory over Justin
Leonard in the '97 PGA Championship wasn't just his 11th PGA Tour win in 12 pro seasons,
it was a breakthrough into hall-of fame territory Love, the son of revered PGA
professional Davis Love Jr., was horn in North Carolina and lives in Sea Island, Ga. He
turned professional in 1985 and, for a time, was known mainly as a devastatingly long
hitter with a faulty all-around game. A victory in the 1987
MCI Heritage Classic -a tournament he has now won four times-got his
career started, but Love only found his true form in 1990. Since then he has only once
gone a full season without winning. His victory total of 13, including last year's PGA and
the Buick Challenge, bought his career earnings to nearly $8.5 million. |
