BIOGRAPHY:

A self taught artist, he is married and father of one son. Leo has been painting since he was five years old. Leo primarily works in pastel, oils, pencils and acrylics to create drawings and paintings that are characterized by photo like realism that captures the heartbeat of  his subjects. A graduate of East Forsyth High School where he earned a scholastic gold key and merits award his senior year, also in 1983 a Rutledge College graduate, he received and outstanding awardin commercial art. In 1991 received his first place for an oil painting called Baby Brown Eyes. In 1993 he was selected by the African-American Arts Festival Advisory Committee to serve as the featured artist for its annual festival. Young Dreamer a pastel painting was used as the poster and brochure cover. This allowed him to do his first one man show at the African-American Atelier Gallery in Greensboro, NC. Since 1994 he has had an ongoing relationship with Mc Cleansville Middle School in Mc Cleansville, NC to perform artist discussions and demonstrations for students. In 1995 he was commissioned by Jefferson Diggs Elementary School to create murals of students in performing arts, music and education. In 1996 began an ongoing relationship with Forsyth Early Childhood Partnership one of Governor Hunt's programs to assure every child gets off to a Smart Start and become a productive citizen of our community. Leo helped create Illustration's for its Keepsake Book a helpful guide too caring for your baby and yourself after delivery. Also, was commissioned to create drawings and paintings for posters and billboards. In 1996-97 as a reward of its success, he designed the cover for the annual report for Family Focus, an adoptive service of the United Way and in 1998 commissioned by Entergon Inc. to do painting for it's AAIL program. Also, Since 1996 he has been commissioned by SMSI a Winston-Salem based company to do several portraits for Sophisticate's Black Hair Magazine, a ongoing contract to develop works for their "Role Models Beyond Beauty" section. In 1997 winner of the Stokes County Arts Council Landmark Print Competition, a sign and numbered print, raised funds to enable the continuation of community and in-school arts programming. In 1998 Leo designed the logo for Baptist Hospital for its Outreach Screening & Education Project in mammography for women. Leo also helped design a logo for clothing line for the Cleveland Avenue Christian Church, Winston-Salem, NC. In 1999 Leo was featured in Art Business News and Shades of Beauty Magazine. In 1999 Leo worked with the Winston-Salem Arts Council summer program "Artiva" and taught a figure drawing class for Summer honors art program at Sawthooth Center in June, 1999.
