Justin Leonard
"The hardest part in this playing in this event was not getting to hit at par 5s
and not getting a chance to hit our long irons."
Few golfers possess the combination of
youth and achievement of runner-up 26-year-old Justin Leonard. The 1997 British Open
champion and 1998 Players Championship winner is already ranked No. 69 in career PGA Tour
earnings and seems destined to continue climbing up the list. Known for his through
preparation, precise ball striking and imaginative short-game skills, Leonard nonetheless
can "take it low" in final-round play; his strong iron play makes him a favorite
in the Par 3 Challenge. Leonard's blistering final-round score of 65 at the 1997 Kemper
Open brought him back from a five stroke deficit to win the tournament. In final-round
play of last year's British Open at Royal Toon, Leonard again shot a 65, good enough for a
three-stroke win over Jesper Parnevik and Darren Clarke. |
