Cancer Fight: Sister and Brother Team Determined To Make a Difference
Siblings honor the legacy of their mother by raising awareness for breast cancer
MITCHELLVILLE, MD - Lorenzo Wooten and Donna Wooten-Williams don’t find much to
quarrel about these days. That’s because the 36 and 42 year old brother
and sister duo are too busy finalizing arrangements for the 2nd Annual Betty T.
Wooten ‘Play in Pink’ Breast Cancer Awareness Golf Tournament to be held on
Monday, April 26th at the Country Club at Woodmore in Mitchellville, MD.
Lorenzo and Donna started the Betty T. Wooten Foundation, in honor of their
mother, a 40 year resident of Prince George’s County, who lost her thirteen year
battle to breast cancer in 2009. In its inaugural year the foundation
raised $36,000 to benefit the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. “My sister and I
realize how blessed we were that my mother survived so long after her initial
diagnosis in 1997,” said Lorenzo, son of Betty Wooten and the tournamentsCo-Chair.
“She was an educator and nurse by profession, so she knew how important it was
to get her annual mammogram and once diagnosed followed a strict medical
regimen.”
Unfortunately, many other Maryland residents are not as informed as Betty
Wooten. According to a recent report, the State of Maryland has a
relatively low breast cancer incidence rate when compared to the rest of the
nation, but sadly our residents are dying of the disease at much higher rates.
Maryland is ranked fifth in the country for breast cancer mortality, with
approximately 800 breast cancer deaths in 2009.
“It just doesn’t make sense to me,” says Donna, Betty Wooten’s only daughter.
“Maryland has some of the most prestigious hospital systems in the country and
yet somehow our loved ones are dying far too early from this disease. I am
determined to spread the message of early detection throughout the community so
that someone else’s mother or father may prolong their battle against breast
cancer long enough to receive a cure.”
Joining the 2nd Annual Betty T. Wooten ‘Play in Pink’ Breast Cancer Awareness
Golf Tournament is Washington Mystics star Alana Beard and Anji Corley from
95.5FM WPGC. The Tournament registration begins at 9:00AM with
Tee-time (Shotgun start) at 10:00AM, to be followed by the start of the Card
Tournament for all non-golfers. The event will include 18 holes of golf,
contests, an awards ceremony, silent auction, and dinner. Registration is
$150/golfer and participants are encouraged to register their foursome on-line
by April 15th to ensure a discounted entry fee and complimentary golf shirt.
All proceeds will be donated to the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade.
