Flyte Tyme THURGOOD MARSHALL Celebrity Golf Classic 1999 Saturday, November 6, 1999
In 1987, the director of the Office for the Advancement of Public Black Colleges of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, and a representative of Miller Brewing Company, determined the need for a merit-based scholarship program. After consultation with other educators and business leaders, it was agreed that the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund should be built upon the criterion of academic excellence. Historically black public colleges can be traced back to 1837 with the establishment of Cheyney State College (now Cheyney University) in Pennsylvania. As a graduate of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, the late Justice Thurgood Marshall knew first-hand, the importance of historically black public colleges in providing African American students:with academic challenges and opportunities for creative and intellectual growth. Annually, six public black colleges produce more than 20 percent of all African American bachelor of science degree recipients in enginering:and graduate over 70 percent of all black degree recipients in agricultural sciences
