GOLF TOURNAMENT HELPS INNER CITY YOUTH FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE By: James I. Neusom, II The City Lights Reporter www.citylightssoftware.com May 30, 2002 8th Annual Golf Classic
Since 1990, the Black Tavern Owners and Southern Nevada Retail Beverage Association has primarily operated in the inner city community and has been committed to providing youth with an opportunity to reach their highest potential. The Youth Scholarship Program was designed to encourage minority students to excel academically, socially and professionally. This influential community minded business groups mission is “to inspire the youth of today to be the best that they can be”. They believe the values taught and life skills learned through the game of golf will carry on throughout the lives of the kids and open the sport up to new potential Tiger Woods.
Don Barden of the Majestic Star and Fitzgerald’s family of resort casinos has joined this worthwhile community based organization to demonstrate the commitment of his corporation to creating a family friendly and socially conscious gaming environment in the city of Las Vegas.
By partnering with Southern Nevada Inner City Youth Golf Association (SNICYGA) they can expose many in the community to the business, social and health benefits of Golf while simultaneously providing at-risk inner city kids with an alternative activity other than the streets. Honesty, integrity, good sportsmanship, individual leadership and dedication are cornerstones of the SNICYGA, which offers clinics, open practice sessions, trips to tournaments and a scholarship fund, free of charge to its members. More than 200 kids have participated in this program over the past seven years, which is open to inner city kids ages 10-18. Several members have gone on to play for their high school teams and a few have earned college golf scholarships. The Black Tavern Owners and Southern Nevada Retail Beverage Association is comprised of many state business and community leaders. They have planed a wonderful golf tournament with many networking and business opportunities incorporated into a full weekend of fun. Scheduled events include private receptions, celebrity luncheon, raffle and award presentations. This year the official honoree is Don H. Barden, the only African-American in the world to own and operate a chain of casinos. If you’ve never had a chance to hear this man speak, then you have truly missed and inspiration. His life epitomizes the tournament theme of “All Things Are Possible When You Believe!” Many mainstream Nevada corporate, business and political leaders will be participating in this charity tournament. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information on advertising and sponsorship for this worthwhile endeavor, or to pre-purchase tickets, contact Ora Mason Tournament Director at (702) 636-8686. Tell your friends about this charity fundraiser. The Black Tavern Owners are committed to creating unique entertainment and social experiences for urban professionals while raising money to support programs that empower and enrich our community. Talk to your employer about how your company can support The Black Tavern Owners. Not only will you get to meet and mingle with many of the leaders here in the city of Las Vegas, but you will also experience the unique esprit de core of one of fastest growing black communities in America.
