About ANN GREGORY

ANN GREGORY

Ann Moore-Gregory was a pioneer in the truest sense of the word. She was a trailblazer on the frontiers of athletics, social justice and civil rights.

Ann was born in Aberdeen, Mississippi in July, 1912. After migrating to Gary, Indiana in the early 1930's, she began playing tennis. While never having played tennis until she was a young adult, Ann became so good, so quick that she won the Gary city championship in 1937.

In 1939, she married Leroy "Percy" Gregory. Their daughter, JoAnn was born in 1942. Shortly thereafter, Percy was drafted into the United States Navy. It was Percy who introduced Ann to golf, prior to going off to serve his country in WWII. By the time he returned from the service in 1945, Ann had become a pretty decent golfer - so to speak.

By 1950, she had become a top flight golfer. In that year, she won six championships of the seven tournaments that she entered, including the National UGA Tournament in Washington, D.C. In 1956, Ann became the first African-American to enter the U.S. Amateur Championship held in Indianapolis, Indiana. She used this pioneering experience as a springboard to greater heights. Her crowning achievement came in 1989, while still mourning the death of her husband of fifty years and at the age of 76 beat all players over the age of 50 to win the gold medal in the U.S. Senior Olympics.

Upon her death in 1990, she was eulogized as "a breath of fresh air and an inspiration to golfers and anyone else who might otherwise have been afraid to face new frontiers."

In a career that spanned over five decades, Ann Moore-Gregory won over 300 tournaments all around the world. Ann is survived by her daughter (JoAnn), son-in-law (E Louis Overstreet), and granddaughters (Lorie and Piper).
